Time to promote a neighbor book on the YA-Christian contemporary shelf. “Where the Wings Rise” has just been released. This is the second book in the “Climbing Higher Series” by Ashlyn McKayla Ohm. It’s an amazing combination of faith and recovery and you should check it out.
The main character is Addisyn Miles, a figure skater who’s fled major relationships four times by the time we get to the beginning of this book. She’s dealt with abusive parents, an antagonistic sister, and a controlling, immoral skating coach who keeps coming back to cause more trouble. Now she’s been reunited with her sister in the mountains of Colorado, but Addisyn’s trust issues are most definitely not resolved. Her older sister has a good heart but is still protective, maybe overprotective. When Brian the evil agent-coach reappears and puts Addisyn in serious danger, Addisyn won’t ask anyone for help, setting her and her sister on a collision course.
One of the fun things about this series of books is that since it’s not a straight-up romance, you don’t quite know where the endpoint will be. It could be if Addisyn makes it to a happily-for-now point with her new love interest (an honorable guy), if she reaches a new understanding with her sister, or if she overcomes the villain-coach, Brian. I had been hoping that Brian would get run over by a Zamboni, but alas, it’s not that kind of book.
This series of books is also about developing faith in God. In the first book, Avery had developed a rich spiritual life in which she had found a new peaceful home in the mountains. She seemed to have taken the opening verse of Psalm 121 “I lift up my eyes to the mountains” really literally, and it took about 100 pages for her to actually talk to someone who wasn’t her dog. Now Avery is talking, but she still seems to be trying too hard not to get hurt again. Addisyn, on the other hand, is beginning to learn a faith life, but it’s clear she needs several more books before she gets where she needs to in that regard.
So, readers, I highly recommend you check out Ashlyn’s webpage and new book.
